How to Translate Merchant with Loco Translate

Before reading this article, please make sure you first read this overview of translation in the context of Merchant.

Let’s say you are using the Merchant module Checkouts and have chosen the Shopify multi-step layout, and there is text on the checkout pages you want to translate.

1. Install Loco Translate

The first thing to do is install and activate the free Loco Translate plugin from WordPress.org.

2. Set up Loco Translate

The next thing to do is, from your WordPress admin dashboard, go to Loco Translate > Plugins and then click on the Merchant Pro link. Now click on + New Language, and choose the language you want to translate strings into.

Leave the location at Custom.

Click on the Start translating button.

Here you search for the strings you want to translate. For example, perhaps I want to translate the string ‘Contact Information’ on the checkout page (remember that we have the Checkouts module in Merchant active and are using the multi-step Shopify layout):

I search for this string, and I translate it into the intended language. Make sure to click the Save button when you’re done.

3. Check things are working

If you haven’t already done so, switch to the language you have added the translation for in your WordPress site settings. You do this from Settings > General > Site Language:

Then go to the frontend where you expect to see your translation (for example, the checkout page if that’s where your translations are). You should see any translations you’ve made on the frontend.

If you need to translate a string that appears in WooCommerce but not in Merchant Pro (for example, a string from the checkout page when you’re not using the Merchant Checkouts module), navigate to Loco Translate > Plugins > WooCommerce to find and translate the desired string.
